description Abstract Social technologies (STs) are developed and/or applied within communities to promote social inclusion and improve living conditions, with their sustainability being linked to the process of appropriation. This article aims to present theoretical reflections on appropriation, analyze its different components associated with social technologies, and understand the appropriation process of an ST of sewage treatment in a rural community in the Central Amazon (Santa Maria Community, Tefé/AM) through interviews conducted with residents who benefited from the technology. Of the mentioned components, three-quarters are associated with acceptance, education, and counterpart, and it was possible to verify eight out of the nine components of ST appropriation identified from the literature review. It is important that these components be considered in projects involving social technologies in the sanitation sector to foster their sustainability.
