Description
English abstract Public Health and Life Skills in School – Competence or Bildung? This article raises questions around how the interdisciplinary topic of Public Health and Life Skills in the Norwegian core curriculum Kunnskapsløftet 2020 is understood in schools in Norway. The study is based on twelve group interviews with broadly composed focus groups at two primary schools and two high schools. Even though the curriculum mainly emphasizes students’ competence based on the description of the interdisciplinary topic, the informants’ understanding can mainly be linked to students’ educational processes, i.e. Bildung. These are seen both from an individual, a social, and a societal perspective. Key findings are the importance of quality in the school’s various communities and that students need both learning about and experiencing health and life skills in everyday school life. The informants highlight the school’s opportunities by being a central community and collaboration arena that has adults with a wide range of skills. The study shows the importance of schools having a holistic approach and including work with students’ public health and life skills in daily practice and in development work.
