Description
Summary:Abstract: In Islamic culture, revelation is a state of the human being in which one attains truth. However, this is not the only state in which a person relates to truth. Farabi, as the founder of Islamic philosophy, was the first to recognize this issue. Another state in which human beings are connected to truth is their condition as rational beings—this constitutes the metaphysical state of humanity. Through his analysis of the concept of milla, which signifies the culture and civic ethos of the society, and its relationship with revelation, as well as its connection to philosophy, Farabi elucidated the relationship between these two states. He demonstrated that the metaphysical state of humanity is the apprehension of the universal, and that the content of revelation, as particular truths, becomes intelligible to human beings only within this broader metaphysical framework. Thus, revelation addresses humanity only within the domain of metaphysics. The claim is that the recognition of this relationship has shaped the course of all Islamic sciences up to the present day. Consequently, all Islamic sciences have been placed within the framework of metaphysics, even if their practitioners appear, on the surface, to be in opposition to it.
