description In this paper, space-constrained scenarios for radar arrays are investigated. To improve the performance of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation for both uniform linear and planar arrays, an innovative design approach for active coupling radar arrays is proposed. The proposed approach employs active coupling to increase the output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and expand the phase difference between array elements, without introducing any additional output loss, by designing appropriate active coupling gains. The experimental results show that the actively-coupled radar array adopting the proposed approach can achieve higher output SNR and narrower beam width than the same array without the proposed technique. Moreover, using the proposed method, the detection SNR threshold can be significantly improved, thus ensuring more accurate DOA estimation. This work paves the way for potentially more accurate DOA estimation in radar systems with limited antenna spacing.
