description Background: Workplace visits are a fundamental part of occupational health (OH) practice for the purposes of risk assessment and understanding how work activities may contribute to, or be affected by, health conditions. They offer valuable opportunities for experiential and interdisciplinary learning.1 There is demand for visits among both doctors and nurses training in OH, but access to workplaces is often challenging. Aims: We developed a specialist registrar-led workplace visit project in three deaneries, with the aim of providing local visits to local clinicians with training needs. We aimed to identify the barriers to workplace visits through analysis of feedback collected during evaluation of the project. Methods: Feedback was collected after each visit for the purposes of project evaluation. We performed statistical analysis of basic quantifiable data related to educational value. We also performed thematic analysis of open-ended survey questions to identify themes related to barriers.2 Results: Our results showed that the visits were of equivalent educational value across the three deaneries. There was a fivefold difference in success rate for arranging visits between deaneries. Thematic analysis identified four main themes: logistical barriers to attendance; role-related barriers to attendance; factors influencing learning at the visit; and exposure to working environments beyond normal work remit. Conclusions: There is clear educational value in visiting workplaces, and simple organisational adjustments, such as timing of visits, can improve access. However, support from the wider OH community is required to identify visit opportunities.
