Description
Summary:In order to account for the corrosion perforation failure cause of a natural gas transmission pipelines, and determine the main factors inducing gas pipeline corrosion failures, scanning electron microscopy(SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS), XRD and other material analysis methods were used to analyze and investigate the macro-morphology, micro-morphology, material and corrosion products of the failure location of a natural gas pipeline. Results showed that the failed pipe section was found to be located in low-lying position and easy to accumulate water.Localized corrosion and perforation mainly occurred at 6 o’clock direction. After elemental component analysis and mechanical performance analysis, it was determined that the pipeline material met the standard requirements. The corrosion product analysis showed that sulfide and carbonates with high contents were clearly observed. Finally, the main causes of corrosion perforation were H2S electrochemical corrosion induced by accumulated water at the bottom of pipeline and corrosion under scale caused by carbonate deposition.
