description This article examines the confidential report requested from the Count of Floridablanca by the Council of Castile in March 1805 regarding a student riot that had taken place in Murcia in January of the previous year. The leading actors in these events (the « Manteista rising » as it was termed by the Council) were students at the Colegio de San Fulgencio, one of the most important spanish seminaries of the time and a noted source for the dissemination of reforming and liberal ideas in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. What is remarkable about the report delivered by the now aging Floridablanca is that it gave him the opportunity to look beyond these specific events and undertake a critical appraisal of the educational methods and systems actually set in motion by earlier enlightened reforms. The article of course includes a detailed account of the revolt and a review of the controversy that it aroused.
