Summary:The article analyzes the creative and personal motives of Russian architects' attention to the design of library buildings at the turn of XIX-XX centuries. It is shown that the library has become the object of creativity of architects due to the fact that architectural profession has acquired social responsibility. It is shown that in connection with political and social changes a new mass types of public buildings are formed, including libraries. The importance of biographical method for studying the project and competition of architectural documentation as a new for library science type of information source is demonstrated.
