Description
Summary:Four letters of Bishop-Archbishop of Minsk and Turov Georgy (Yaroshevsky) to Patriarch Tikhon (Bellavin) of Moscow and All Russia, written in March-May 1918, are introduced into scientific circulation. The Reverend author described the disasters that occurred in the Minsk diocese during the short-lived initial rule of the Bolsheviks in Belarus; the partial improvement of the situation of Church affairs under German occupation; the activities of Catholic Poles hostile to Orthodoxy; the mood of local socio-political circles. Along the way, he gave the Patriarch an account of his own actions, quite frankly stated his thoughts on various complex issues, and in some cases asked for help. In his letters, the ruling Bishop of Minsk appears as a champion of the unity of the Orthodox Russian Church, a fighter against Catholic expansion, a staunch Russian patriot and even a monarchist. This portrait contrasts very strongly with the image of the persecutor of Russian Orthodoxy, which he acquired, not without reason, in the early 1920s, going into the service of the Catholic government of the revived Polish state, which ended with his death at the hands of an extremist archimandrite in 1923. The letters are published according to archival originals (one typewritten and three handwritten) stored in the St. Tikhon's Orthodox University.
