This article presents new viewpoints with regard to the participation of free men of color in the social movements of colonial Bahia during the period of lndependance. Considering the errors incurred in various interpretations and syntheses, this article deals with the movement of 1798 within the context of the urban crisis which affected Bahia until 1838, and presents a new contribution to the discussion of this theme.
