| description | The results are presented of a comparative study of the sources of the colorants detected in pre-Columbian textiles made formerly by several indigenous groups of the Eastern Cordillera in Colombia (the Guane, U´wa and Muisca) and in those still used today by the indigenous Ika of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in northern Colombia, (departamento of the Cesar). This study, which is being carried out with the participation of the Ika community, demonstrates that in both the archaeological textiles and the ethnographic examples, the dyes are used on cellulose fibres and that the use of brazil wood (possibly Haematoxylum sp.) is common to both regions. So far 16 different species of dye plants used by the Ika have been identified, employed both for practical purposes and for religious offerings, in accordance with the ancestral lore of their community. This study underlines the importance of dyeing for the Ika community and the interest of its members in preserving this tradition. At the same time, it provides an opportunity for obtaining reference collections from a new group of dye plants which will contribute to our understanding of the sources of unknown colorants in the pre-Columbian textiles of Colombia. |
