Description
Summary:Introduction: Phubbing, a behavioral pattern characterized by excessive smartphone engagement at the expense of interpersonal interactions, has emerged as a significant concern in the digital era. From a classical perspective, it can be understood as a derangement in Samjna, impacting Chetana, Indriya Karma, and Manas. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Samjnasthapana Mahakashaya Siddha Ghrita in restoring Samjna balance and mitigating phubbing tendencies. Methods: A single-arm interventional study was conducted on college students (aged 18–25 years) in Mysuru, diagnosed with phubbing tendencies. Participants received Samjnasthapana Mahakashaya Siddha Ghrita for a defined intervention period. Assessment tools included a validated phubbing scale and an attention span test (AST), administered pre- and post-intervention. Data were analyzed for statistical significance to evaluate the changes in phubbing behaviors and cognitive engagement. Result: Among the 30 young adult participants, notable patterns in lifestyle, diet, and psychological attributes were identified, including universal sedentary behavior, frequent sleep suppression, and a predominance of Avara Satwa Bala and absence of Satwa Sara. Following the administration of Samjnasthapana Mahakashaya Siddha Ghrita, statistically significant improvements were observed in phubbing tendencies and attention span, with paired samples tests indicating high significance (P < 0.001 for both Phubbing Assessment Scale and AST). Postintervention analysis revealed reduced phubbing scores and enhanced attention span, supported by subjective reports of improved focus, decreased mental fatigue, and better interpersonal engagement. Conclusion: The study findings align with classical principles, wherein excessive gadget use was understood as a Manovaha Srotas Dushti leading to cognitive fragmentation. By strengthening Indriya Karma, Manas, and Chetana, the intervention addressed perceptual and cognitive imbalances. These results support the therapeutic potential of traditional formulations in managing digital age cognitive concerns. Samjnasthapana Mahakashaya Siddha Ghrita demonstrated efficacy in reducing phubbing tendencies and improving attention span, reinforcing its role in improving the process of Samjna at the level of cognition.
