Description
Summary:This paper intends to reflect about the possibilities of upward mobility for freedmen in Rio Grande de São Pedro do Sul, in the beginning of the 19th century. It will be analyzed through a singular case, that of the freedman Pedro Gonçalves, a farmer who became an owner of slaves and of a small herd of cattle. The sources that have been used were the criminal proceeding that were opened after his murder, in the district of Caí, in 1819, as well as post-mortem inventories. The sources were analyzed with the intention of reconstructing some aspects of Pedro Gonçalves' life story. In this sense, we focused especially on his economic activities, the constitution of his estate and his relationship with slaves and free men.
