Summary: | Lists came into demand early on in the American enterprise, and multiplied in parallel with systems for control of passengers for the Indies and means of checking compliance with the official formalities established by the authorities. The lists registering the people who went to settle the New World may be divided into three broad categories according to their purpose: control, correction/penalisation and record-keeping. This paper focuses on the last two categories, examining their production, types and functions. |
