Description
Summary:Introduction: The indigenous games of Indonesia have been culturally significant in local customs, rituals, and social life. At this level of intangible cultural heritage, these sports are the preservers not just of physical entertainment, but language, identity, and regional knowledge passed from a people’s ancestors. Objective: The aim of this research is to investigate the role of traditional sports name as one part of Indonesian linguistic and cultural identity, with its local knowledge as well as intergenerational transmission across local language and dialect. Methodology: A systematic literature review was conducted using scholarly articles, books, and reports from 2019–2025. Sources were selected based on relevance to traditional Indonesian sports, language use, and cultural preservation, using databases like Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. Discussion: Findings show that terms like jurus, markas, and keseimbangan represent more than sport—they embody values, cosmology, and identity. However, globalization, education gaps, and digital neglect threaten their survival, highlighting the urgency for revitalization strategies in schools and communities. Conclusion: Preserving traditional sports terminology supports cultural resilience. Schools, policymakers, and media must collaborate to integrate these terms into educational and digital platforms, ensuring their continuity. Safeguarding this vocabulary protects not just language, but the soul of Indonesia’s diverse cultural traditions.
