Description
Summary:Following the outbreak of a gold rush in 2016, Mauritania is experiencing a new dynamic in its extractive sector with the formalisation of artisanal gold mining and the emergence of a semi-industrial activity. By reconstructing the gold production chain, we describe the logic behind this formalisation, which has had the effect of reinforcing the hierarchical relationships between actors, increasing the dependence of gold miners and making illegalisms of the dominant actors in the semi-industrial sector invisible. In addition, we show that the expansion of a globalised semi-industrial extractivism is contributing to a form of industrialisation ‘from below’, unprecedented for the country.
