Description
Summary:The current paper deals with the circulation of people in frontier spaces extremely isolated from urban centers of the Rio de la Plata Viceroyalty. In the late 18th century an expedition, whose goal was to settle forts and defensive enclaves, departed from Buenos Aires to the Patagonian cost; later on a group of men living in those frontier posts decided to abandon them in order to share their lives with the Indians. They rather risked uncertainty - of living with almost unknown native groups - than to keep on starving and working hard in a hostile climate. In fact, they were the predecessors of those characters - secretaries, interpreters, spies and informants - who played an important role in the negotiations and meetings held between whites and Indians in later decades. However, sources are scarce and if we want to reconstruct their itineraries we have to work with small signs in order to visualize the activities and functions of these subaltern actors.
