The text attempts to reconstruct the social relations of the backcountry of the colonial Northeast. It focuses on the dance "Bumba-meu-boi", one of the most authentic and widespread cultural manifestations of backlands society. The study utilizes the perspective of the New Cultural History which emphasizes the cultural manifestations of the anonymous masses as an alternative space for historical investigation.
