| Summary: | The article analyzes key aspects of the Circassian issue in the South of Russia. The article deals with both the historical background of Circassian irredentism and its current state. There are three main aspects of the Circassian question in the South of Russia in the XXI century: requirements of Circassian national movements of Russia's recognition of events of the Caucasian war as genocide of Circassians; calls of Circassian public organizations to Russian authorities on the need for a policy of repatriation of Circassians to their historical homeland; an attempt to actualize in the political discourse by Circassian public organizations the idea of creating a single Circassian administrative subject in the territory of Russian Federation. The author comes to the conclusion that during considering these problems in the plane of practical policy, as tasks that must be urgently addressed, they acquire additional complexity and are practically unrealizable. It is also concluded that, despite a certain decline of the Circassian question after 2014, it is rather premature to talk about its final removal from the ethnopolitical agenda of the South of Russia at the present time, because the complex of ideological units, forming it, is a symbolic expression of the real specifics and problems of the modern "Circassian world", where different groups of the Circassian population, located in different political and socio-cultural conditions, retain a common identity, an important component of which is a number of tragic events of the past of the Circassian ethnos. Due to the fact that a number of requests of the Circassian national movement in the sphere of practical policy cannot be implemented, it is important to find positive answers to them within the framework of symbolic policy. |
