As deer numbers multiplied their status underwent dramatic changes, from protected animals to hunted pests, all in less than a hundred years. Today, the helicopter hunters easy access to high peaks and distant valleys keeps numbers under control. For deer, the game park has now become a place of refuge but in the early days of the big herds, hardy government hunters tracked them down on foot.
