| Item Description: | A perennial task for the highway engineer has been and will be continue to be the development of design and construction techniques to integrate the highway to the natural environment. One of the more difficult and persistent problems is stabilising soft rock cut slopes. These often become an eye-sore and a maintenance headache due to the easily-loosened rock falling and accumulating in the ditch line. The key to stablising these slopes and eliminating the problem is the early establishment of vegetative cover. Engineers of the Bureau of Public Roads, Tennessee, have developed a method to establish vegetative cover on ripable rock cut slopes to control erosion and stabilise the slope. This simple and economical method is called serrated slopes which is basically terracing the slopes with small steps. |
