A Malagan is a series of feasts held to commemorate the death of important men and women of the community. At these feasts pigs, taro, and other foods are exchanged, carvings made, and masked men parade thourgh the villages, acting out dramatic events of previous times. This Malagan was planned by three brothers of the Kalabat clan, Eliachim, Raymond and Anton Kaparau, to commemorate the death in 1965 of Paul Buk Buk, an important man of their clan. Traditional Malagans as elaborate as these are seldom held in New Ireland today. The ceremonies at Panatgin represent the culmination of many years planning and cooperative effort by the people of the area. | |
