500 0 |a The Gogodala tribe numbering some 6000 people inhabits the flood plain of the Aramia River north of the Fly River delta in Western Papua. Most of the area is low-lying and for nine months of the year, inundated with water. Extensive swamps and lagoons are studded with many islands and surrounded by many grass-covered ridges. It is on these that the Gogodala build their villages and make gardens. Being essentially swamp dwellers, the canoe is of vital importance to the Gogodala and is honoured in the customs and traditions of the tribe.
