Description
Item Description:Forestry in New Zealand is very big business. The Forest Service and private companies have planted more than one million acres of introduced conifers. The emphasis today is on vigorous expansion, 50,000 acres of new forests are planted every year. Some trees have been planted to protect high country against erosion but most fore ts have been established to grow trees for timber. About 40,000 people work in forestry and its associated industries. Thousands of logs are transported every day from forests to mills and factories where they may be sawn into timber, converted into paper, turned into plywood, fibre board or particle board. But a disease which killed forest trees or reduced wood production can have a very serious effect on the whole industry.
