Ира́н ( ), с 1979 года Исла́мская Респу́блика Ира́н ( — ''Джомхури́-йе Эслɒми́-йе Ирɒ́н'' ; до 1935 страна была известна также как Пе́рсия) — государство в Передней Азии со столицей в Тегеране.
На западе граничит с Ираком, на северо-западе — с Азербайджаном, Арменией, Турцией, на севере — с Туркменистаном, на востоке — с Афганистаном и Пакистаном. С севера Иран омывается Каспийским морем, с юга — Персидским и Оманским заливами Индийского океана.
Государственный язык — персидский — один из иранских (индоиранских) языков с письменностью на основе арабицы. Бо́льшую часть населения страны составляют персы; азербайджанцы, курды и луры являются наиболее значительными этническими группами населения. Большинство верующих Ирана — мусульмане, при этом ислам является его государственной религией.
Эта страна с древних времён играла ключевую роль на Востоке и имеет тысячелетнюю историю.
Современный Иран обладает четвёртой по размеру ВВП (по ППС) экономикой в исламском мире и второй по размеру в Западной Азии (после Турции). Это одно из наиболее технологически развитых государств региона, располагающееся в стратегически важном регионе Евразии и располагающее крупными запасами нефти и природного газа.
